Web Design

Beautiful, responsive web sites, designed especially for you

Great web design is not just about the look and feel of a website, it’s also about the experience of using it too.

Design, branding, layout and functionality, your website needs to reflect your image. No matter how good your site looks if it doesn’t perform, it’ll be remembered for all the wrong reasons. That’s why picking the right web designer could be one of the most important things you do.

The consequences of getting it wrong could see your budget gone, your business struggling and your customers struggling to find you. I understand the consequences and I understand the value of design. The correct execution of carefully considered design can instil trust in a brand and fortify the quality of its products.

My approach is simple: I’ll discover what makes you tick, review your brand, identify your goals, and tailor-make a web experience that your audience will love.

Responsive Web Design

A responsive website is designed and coded in such a way that it is able to adapt to different screen sizes and devices which makes them look great on desktop computers and mobile devices too. In a world where mobile devices are used more than standard computers, your website needs to be responsive. You’ll be pleased to know what every website I make is 100% responsive as standard. I’ll even test your site on various screen resolutions and devices to ensure it renders correctly and looks great.

My Process

Getting To Know You

Every project starts with a conversation. This is a great chance for us to get to know each other. We’ll talk about what you do, who your audience is and what you want your website to be able to do. We’ll talk through the options to achieve what you’re looking for and look at your timescales and budget.

Following our first meeting, you’ll be asked to register on my client dashboard (where I manage all my projects. Shortly after this, you’ll receive my full proposal and contract. At this point, you’re welcome and even encouraged to talk through the proposal with me to make sure I’ve covered all the points.

Once you’re happy with the proposal, contract, timescales and estimate, it’s time to hit the sign button and then it’s all systems go.

Building A Design With Wireframes

The first step of all my web design projects is to get a visualization of the structure. I do this using wireframes.

These wireframes will be the first look at how your site will appear. This helps us make sure we’re getting the priority right for the goals of your website and saves wasting time building something that doesn’t hit the mark.

With every step, you’ll be kept in the loop and up to date on everything. At this stage, all the wireframes and my thoughts will be shared with you. Your feedback is really appreciated in the early stages, it’s far easier to change a design now than it is further down the line.

Once we’ve finalised how you want your site to look and feel, it’s time to build it.

Your site will be built from the ground up to your specifications. Unlike many developers, I prefer to build websites in a ‘live’ development environment. This means you’ll get to actually see how the site is coming along and offer feedback at every step of the way. I prefer to do this on the server that will eventually host your website, but can also do it on my own development server.

Why do I prefer this method? Simple. I value your feedback and would rather you tell me now if you don’t like something, than tell me when we’ve deployed the site. Building in this way gives you the ability to see the site being constructed and really get a feel for how it’s going to work.

Testing & Refinement Phase 1

The next step is to test everything is looking as it should. I complete this across multiple devices including various monitor sizes on a desktop, laptops, tablets and mobile phones. At this stage, I’ll test that everything is where it should be, ensure the design is consistent across the site and ensure it’s in line with the overall goal.

Anything that isn’t quite right gets fixed and the overall experience is refined.

This stage is really important. At the end of it, I’ll be asking you to sign off on the design and usually ask that no more design changes take place.

Your signed-off design is now ready for its final development. This can take different forms depending on the type of site you’ve asked for but usually includes adding in your own content, making certain features that might require API’s work (such as maps, twitter feeds etc) and ensuring suitable methods of managing the content of the site are working and ready to use.

At this point, you’ll be asked to sign-off on the overall site. I usually ask that no further changes are made until post-launch.

Testing & Refinement Phase 2

Nearly there! I’ll repeat all the testing I’ve already done and refine things again if needed. I’ll also be checking that all API’s are working as expected and make any refinements needed to improve the loading times and responsiveness of your website.

This is best done on the server that will actually be hosting the website. This helps ensure the site is fully compatible with your current server setup helps prevent any unexpected hiccups on launch day.

Launch & Aftercare

Your site is done. We’ll agree a time and date to launch the site that suits you. On launch day, I’ll start preparing your site a couple of hours before it’s due to go live. This includes removing your old site (if you have one) and moving your new site over to its final home with a ‘coming soon’ page.

Final checks are done, including checking all forms work correctly, performing a live transaction on any e-commerce integration and fully checking the site for broken links. Once all that’s done, the coming soon page is removed and your site is officially launched.

Your website comes with a 6 month warranty against any bugs or defects. So if anything breaks (assuming it wasn’t broke by you), I’ll fix it. I’ll also monitor your site’s performance during this time and make a few tweaks if needed.

Keeping your chosen platform monitored and up to date is really important. So I always recommend a support package which will take care of all that for you and also includes adding content updates to the site itself. Discounts are available for sites built by me. If you’re using WordPress, you can check out WordPress Care for more details. If you’re using any other platform, drop me a message and we can discuss your optioins.
